Voskos Greek yogurt is an excellent choice for pregnant women who need additional protein for their growing bodies. It also provides essential nutrients including calcium, which is essential for building strong, dense bones early in life, and maintaining strength and bone health later in life.

Protein:

During pregnancy, protein needs are elevated due to the needs of the growing baby. Amino acids, or broken down proteins, are needed to build cells essential for the growth of the baby. Particularly during the second and third trimesters, women should consume at least 70 grams of protein per day. As compared to non-pregnant women, who require on average, about 50 grams per day, protein needs during pregnancy are significantly increased. With one 8 oz Voskos Greek yogurt, women can meet about 1/3 of their protein requirements! Other protein sources include:

3 oz lean beef – 21 g
3 oz roasted chicken breast – 27 g
3 oz salmon – 23 g
2 TBSP peanut butter – 8 g
½ cup canned black beans – 9 g
1 egg – 6 g
½ c tofu (firm) – 20 g
1 c skim milk – 8 g

Thus, eating about 4 protein rich foods per day will assist in meeting pregnant women’s protein needs. An example day includes: 2 glasses skim milk, 3 oz chicken breast, ½ cup beans, and 8 oz Voskos Greek yogurt. Vegetarian women need to be mindful to ensure they are meeting their protein needs. It is important to utilize the excellent vegetarian protein sources available including a variety of canned beans, soy protein products, and even whole grains, including oatmeal which contains 6 grams protein per cup.

Calcium:

Pregnant women need to ensure they are meeting their calcium requirements, which are approximately 1000 mg per day. If deficient, calcium is taken from the mother’s bones to ensure the growing baby receives a sufficient quantity. Voskos Greek Yogurt is a perfect way to ensure calcium needs are being met. Just 8 ounces provides approximately 400 mg of bone building calcium. Other calcium sources include salmon (3 oz) 181 mg, cooked spinach (1/2 c) 120 mg, or calcium fortified orange juice (6 oz) 200 mg.

Choose Voskos Greek Yogurt as a fantastic snack, to keep hunger at bay, and get valuable nutrition at the same time. Try it. Once you go Greek, there is no turning back!
