Sun Valley, CA—March 15, 2011 – Sun Valley Dairy, makers of Voskos Greek Yogurt, famous for its 24 grams of protein in a single serving, has pledged to donate $1.00 for every Facebook “like” to a Japan earthquake relief fund.

In the wake of the disastrous earthquake and tsunami which devastated the nation and affected the world, from March 15 through March 22, any Facebook fan who “likes” the earthquake relief fund announcement will positively contribute towards the company’s efforts over a seven day period.

“Our prayers and sympathies are with the people of Japan during this most difficult time,” says Vanessa Nielsen, director of marketing for Sun Valley Dairy, makers of Voskos Greek Yogurt and YoGreek Yogurt Parfait + Crunch. “We hope that the funds we will provide will help in the effort to meet the needs of the Japanese people. We must work together to assist the victims of this terrible natural disaster and our wonderful fans will be our biggest supporters.”

All money generated from this announcement will be channeled to a charity designated to help restore the 3rd largest economy.  The charity receiving the fund has yet to be decided but will be announced as soon as possible. Simply go to www.facebook.com/voskosgreekyogurt and “like” the specific wall posting

I think this is terrible making us “Like” you so that you donate. Look at Bing, they just did this and it caused a HUGE uproar. Be careful.

Hi Bryan, Thank you for your concern. Our online community is a great forum to raise awareness. This also gives people an opportunity to contribute funds that they may otherwise lack. We are raising even more funds with our fans’ involvement. Anyone who prefers to make a direct donation is very welcome to do so.

It’s perfectly fine and not remotely terrible, especially because they’re asking you to “like” the entry on their wall regarding this specific subject, not to like their page or brand. I like both!

I am so surprised and disappointed in Voskos, actually doing this “marketing / promotion” campaign that is taking advantage of such a devastting event.
So if no one “liked” the post, you would not make donation?
I was a fan of your yogurt until today, but it is in my “not to buy” list now.

ANYTHING that is going to help those people is commendable. Who cares if the business is going to get some demographic info or advertising on the side. What matters is that we help and “liking” something is such a minimal effort- why WOULDN’T you do it? Unless you’re an ogre or something!

I, like Bryan, am not a huge fan of this idea either, but I’d rather do what I can than nothing at all. Is there a cap on the amount you guys will donate?

Seriously? I think we need to focus on helping in all types of ways and with social media this could make a difference. I do not view it in a negative light or perceive that Voskos is trying to exploit such a terrible event..

Wow, I’m really surprised at the negative comments, to be honest! From what I’ve seen, if a company offers a coupon or a free sample on Facebook in exchange for clicking “Like”, thousands upon thousands of people won’t hesitate to Like the page. If you don’t feel comfortable sharing your Likes with just anyone, that’s certainly your choice! I’ve seen people give away their Likes for far less, let me tell you. (Psst… if you want to “Like” a specific post but still don’t want to “Like” a company’s page out of principal or whatever, you can always “Unlike” a company’s page after you like their post– your “Like” will still count on the post.)

As for the marketing/advertising/promotion comments, I don’t know how advertising works for a company Facebook page, but as far as I see it, if the company could make a little extra money from advertising due to an increase of traffic over the next week that’s fine with me considering the more traffic, the more “Likes”, the more money donated to a worthy cause.

This happens all the time…. companies offer to donate to a cause in exchange for “likes” or whathaveyou. What’s the big deal? It’s not like you have to buy a product for them to donate..

Don’t listen to the nay sayers. Using your brand, your influence, your online “power” to help the people of Japan is doing good, it’s being good. This is a social media world. We all know (or the smart ones know) how it all works. And after we have all contributed to relief efforts we can CHOOSE to unlike the page, the brand and whatever else we like today. That is the POWER we have as “the people” using Social Media.
KUDOS and THANKS for your part in sending aid to Japan in this tragedy.

Really People,
They could just sit back like 10,000 other companies and “watch” what happens. Instead they are making an effort to help and this inturns supports them too! You really want to send words of discord? Perhapse you should praise them for getting this together to help. You would have still supported them if they had done nothing at all??? Think about that. I am now Going to support a company I did not know until now. And the reason I know is because of this “Act”. Nice work Voskos. Keep it up!

Thanks..You did not have to do this to help and you are appreciated by most everyone…I feel sad for those who are so negative about it.

Hi Nicole, We have committed to a full week of “likes.” Thank you for your support!

I strongly support this effort, but not the means. Because of serious privacy concerns, I will not participate in Facebook for ANY reason, including good causes. Wish you had found a different way to do it.

I think it is highly disappointing that you are using a tragedy (that is still unfolding!) as a marketing campaign.

Either donate money if you have it, or don’t, but matching your donations to Facebook “likes” is embarrassing to your company. I certainly won’t be searching for Voskos in the grocery.

I don’t understand why people are getting so upset because of the way Voskos is trying to raise money. At least they are making an effort to help these people. They are not trying to take advantage of anyone. Besides even if u don’t use this brand of yogurt you can always “unlike” them later on.The point is to do as much as we can as fellow human beings to help save as many lives as possible. Am I wrong? Wouldn’t we want others to do everything they could to help us if we were going through a disaster? I know i would. This is a good way for people who cant afford to do anything to help Japan out, even if its only $1. Every dollar counts in the end. And we cant even begin to imagine the amount of sorrow and suffering these people are experiencing right now. The images I’ve seen on tv just break my heart, to see it in person is probably unbearable. We as a nation need to pull together and help out as best we can, that’s all im saying.I totally support Voskos efforts in this! ^_^

Voskos keep up the good work. I loved you before and now I love you even more. For those of you here being negative, many would not have been able to donate anything and through Voskos feel they can contribute something. I wouldn’t have known about being able to donate if I had not seen this in my Facebook feed via a friend’s “like”. There is nothing wrong with them saving on marketing to be able to donate it elsewhere. Kudos for being one of the companies that are doing something positive with your marketing campaigns. In a world where ridiculous amounts of money are spent to be seen during a half-time show, I will gladly click like for that money to go towards a good cause.

I think this is a great way to reach out to help while spreading your product name in a positive way! Thanks for thinking outside the box for a win-win opportunity!

You people are ridiculous. Look at our society, everything revolves around the internet and technology. If this is going to help raise money for this tragedy then MORE POWER TO VOSKOS!
